Taking your advice is like the hens
agreeing to the fox’s program for breaking the impasse. First, you
misdirect the reader’s attention away from the real issue, the lack of
money and its diversion to the purchase of “stuff” that enriches the
rich, iPads. Then you are unable to define what is an “incompetent
teacher,” or a “master” teacher.” Moreover, you do not acknowledge that
present practice puts the entire decision in the hands of the school
site administrator. If the principal doesn’t like you how are you going
to show that you are a good teacher? How would putting the process in
the hands of newly minted Teach Plus kool-aid drinkers who think that
the principal knows all make this more fair? We do not view reformers
as “focusing solely on students.” Since they make outrageous salaries
doing the same jobs we do – Steve Barr and Ben Austin to name two – we
view them as focused upon hijacking the people’s commons, that is money
for public education. The record of charter schools does not match what
is promised anywhere.
I continue. “Teacher quality” is an
idea worthy of Goebbels, that is, repeat a lie enough and people will
believe it. Go ahead and take umbrage with the comparison but this is
how the subjugation of a segment of society begins.
In LAUSD the P.A.R. program’s final decision still depends upon the pricipal always and unerringly.
Tenure is antique, it is ancient and well-founded. It is in place to protect teachers’ right to express their opinion and to retain their jobs without being subject to the whims of administration, including those based upon sexual orientation, politics or religion.
The “destructive polarization” is bought and paid for on your side and for us it represents what is fundamentally important in this society, to speak freely without endangerin one’s livelihood.
TEACHER TENURE MUST BE STRENTHENED.
